Leadership Skills in Global Event Organization: Building Trust Through International Collaboration

Interview with Hanni Tran, Founder of GapEdu – Global Consultancy on Development Policy and Practice

Author: Global Event Leadership Series by GapEdu

In today’s interconnected world, international forums and global partnerships require more than operational excellence. They demand leadership grounded in calm decision-making, accountability, integrity, and cross-cultural understanding.

As the Founder of GapEdu – Global Consultancy on Development Policy and Practice, Hanni Tran has been actively working with governments, international organizations, tourism authorities, and private sector leaders to facilitate global dialogue and cooperation through strategic events and policy-oriented initiatives.

In this interview, Hanni Tran shares her perspectives on leadership in international event organization and the importance of building trust through global collaboration.

Q: International event organization is often high-pressure and fast-paced. What leadership quality do you believe matters most?

Hanni Tran:
One of the most important qualities is calm leadership. In international projects, unexpected situations are unavoidable — schedule changes, protocol adjustments, logistical challenges, or last-minute coordination between stakeholders from different countries.

A leader must remain composed under pressure because the team reflects the energy of its leadership. When leaders stay calm, people focus on solutions instead of panic. I believe professionalism is truly tested during difficult moments, not easy ones.

Calmness also strengthens diplomacy. In global collaborations, emotional intelligence and respectful communication are extremely important.

Q: You often emphasize accountability in your professional philosophy. Why is it so critical in global partnerships?

Hanni Tran:
Accountability is the foundation of trust. International collaborations involve governments, corporations, institutions, and individuals who rely on each other’s professionalism and commitment.

For me, accountability means taking ownership of responsibilities fully — both successes and challenges. If there is an issue, transparent communication and proactive solutions are essential.

At GapEdu, we believe credibility is built through consistency. When partners know that commitments will be respected and communication will remain honest, long-term cooperation becomes possible.blank

Q: Integrity is another value closely associated with your leadership approach. How do you define integrity in practice?

Hanni Tran:
Integrity means alignment between words, actions, and intentions. In international environments, cultures and working styles may differ, but sincerity and ethical conduct are universally respected.

I believe integrity is reflected in small everyday decisions — how you communicate, how you treat partners, and how you manage responsibilities even when no one is watching.

For sustainable global collaboration, integrity is not optional. It is essential for maintaining trust, reputation, and meaningful partnerships over time.

Q: Global collaboration requires working across different cultures and professional systems. What leadership skill becomes most valuable in this context?

Hanni Tran:
Listening is one of the most underrated leadership skills.

Effective international collaboration requires understanding perspectives before making decisions. Different countries and organizations operate with different priorities, communication styles, and expectations.

A strong leader creates space for dialogue and mutual respect. I also believe adaptability is extremely important. Leaders must know how to adjust to different environments while maintaining professionalism and core values.

Q: In large-scale international events, unexpected issues can happen. How can organizers minimize apologies to stakeholders while maximizing their positive experience and appreciation for the event?

Hanni Tran:
I believe the foundation of a successful event experience begins long before the event itself. Stakeholders feel confident and valued when leadership demonstrates discipline, clarity, and strong governance throughout the entire process.

One important aspect of leadership in global event organization is having a structured and organized mindset. Leaders should remember what has been discussed, what decisions have been made, and what commitments have already been communicated. Constant confusion, repeated changes, or asking teams the same operational questions repeatedly can create uncertainty within the organization itself.

Strong event governance requires consistency, attention to detail, and the ability to align decisions early. When planning is well structured from the beginning, many unnecessary problems can be prevented before they even occur.

I also believe leaders must develop the ability to anticipate negative scenarios before making decisions. Every decision in international event management has operational and reputational impact. A strong leader should always ask: What could go wrong? How will this affect stakeholders? How can we prepare solutions in advance?

This predictive mindset helps reduce unexpected situations and allows teams to respond professionally when challenges arise.

Another important point is that successful events are not built only at the top leadership level. Every layer matters — from protocol teams and logistics coordinators to communications staff and technical support. Each person contributes to the stakeholder experience.

When all operational layers are aligned with the same standards of professionalism, stakeholders do not only feel satisfied — they feel respected and grateful to be part of the experience. That is the difference between simply organizing an event and truly creating long-term trust and partnership.

Q: What has been one of the biggest lessons from your experience working with global partners?

Hanni Tran:
I learned that relationships are as important as strategy.

Successful global events and partnerships are not built overnight. They are developed through consistency, trust, and genuine respect over time.

Another important lesson is that leadership should empower people. Strong leaders create environments where teams and partners feel confident contributing ideas and solutions collaboratively.

Q: What advice would you give to young professionals interested in international event organization and global cooperation?

Hanni Tran:
First, build discipline and professionalism early. Attention to detail matters greatly in international work.

Second, develop strong communication skills — including listening, writing, and intercultural understanding.

Third, protect your credibility. Reputation is one of the most valuable assets in global collaboration.

Finally, stay humble and continue learning. The international environment evolves constantly, and effective leaders are those who remain adaptable while staying grounded in strong values.

Q: What vision do you hope GapEdu will continue to contribute through its global collaborations?

Hanni Tran:
At GapEdu, our vision is to bridge policy and practice through meaningful international collaboration.

We work to connect governments, industries, academia, and development stakeholders in ways that create practical impact rather than symbolic engagement. Global events should not only be platforms for discussion, but also catalysts for sustainable cooperation and responsible leadership.

Ultimately, leadership is not measured by visibility or titles. It is measured by the trust you build, the people you support, and the positive impact you create over time.
